Active School Flag Award

The Senior school was once again granted the Active School Flag Silver Award by the Directorate for STEM and VET Programmes. The aim of this award was to celebrate efforts in promoting and nurturing physical activity amongst students, parents and staff.

To earn the award, the school worked on a number of projects and initiatives during the scholastic year. Such projects included the formation of a sports council, the organisation of school sports events, the participation in inter and intra-school competitions, collaboration with sports clubs, the organisation of a sports day, and inclusive education.

The council, which has been established since 2013, aims to promote physical activity by organising sports activities for the whole school throughout the year. One of the most successful projects coordinated by the Sports Council was ‘Track the Track’, a weekly break activity during which all students were encouraged to walk, jog or run around the track and have their number of laps tracked and recorded.

Throughout the year, the school invited and collaborated with a number of sports clubs and academies to promote their sport either through the PE lessons or after school. Such clubs and academies included the Malta Karate Federation, the Moveo Dance Company, Zeljko Aras Athletics Club, Badminton Malta, Pembroke Athleta Running Club, and the Swish Project.

The school had also participated in inter-school competitions organised by the Malta Football Association, the Maltese Olympic Committee, the Malta School Sports Federation, Athletics Malta, and Sport Malta. Such competitions included football, basketball, cross-country and swimming.

Physical activity was also promoted by way of a cross-curricular approach through a trekking activity in a joint collaboration between the Physical Education and the Environmental subject teachers.

Perhaps the most awaited sport event of the year was Sports Day. Parents were invited to visit and participate, while all teachers managed the games. The participation of parents and teachers helped us reach another criteria of the Active School Flag Award, since the participation of parents and teachers in sports activities is highly encouraged.

Another criteria reached was inclusion. At our school we ensure inclusion in all sports activities regardless of individual differences such as disability, race, cultural background, economic status, or any other factor.

By earning the Active School Award the school remains committed to promote a healthy lifestyle through physical activity amongst its members.
